Seaman Builders win Best Builder at national LABC Awards 2017

O Seaman and Son Builders have won the national Best Local Builder Award at the Grand Final of the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards for the work they carried out to restore Cupola House in Bury St Edmunds.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects and teams from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design. Seamans Building was recommended for this prestigious award by the building control team at St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “When local builders are nominated for our awards by the Local Authority Building Control Team, it really demonstrates what our awards are about. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings.”

Cllr Alaric Pugh, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Planning and Growth said, “I am delighted that this local business has achieved national recognition for its work on such an iconic project. I am particularly pleased that the LABC Chief Executive highlighted what positive working relationships with local council building control teams delivers. Our service underpins the quality of our built environment, (historic or new build) and being a great place to live is fundamental to the health of the local community and economy. This was an exceptionally demanding project and it really shows how we work best when we work together.’

Duncan Haydon, of Seaman Builders, said: “This was a team effort from the start and we are delighted the efforts of the build team, who applied so much detail to this complex refurbishment, have been supported by St Edmundsbury’s LABC. I am pleased the judges valued our commitment to using regular trade teams. We wouldn’t be able to deliver high quality restoration and contemporary projects without investing in apprenticeships and in-house training to get the skills for consistency of quality. This endorsement shows what management, craft and skill sets we have within our company, and are available locally.”

The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Friday 10 November 2017 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by Gyles Brandreth, writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Conservative Member of Parliament. Over 800 building industry professionals including contractors, architects and engineers attended the celebration to find out which projects won across the 15 hotly contested categories.
