Taxi licences

The Taxi and private hire handbooks for our councils are ready for viewing in their first stages and are in operation from immediate effect from 12 April 2017. New age restrictions for some vehicles and mandatory training are at the forefront of the changes. Personal copies will be mailed out in due course. Please direct any questions to our licensing team on licensing@westsuffolk.gov.uk

If you want to run a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle business, you will need to apply for the appropriate licence from the licensing authority you wish to operate in. Separate licences will be required for vehicles, drivers and operating companies.

The purpose of licensing is to ensure the safety of the public, by checking that the drivers are fit and proper, and that the vehicles they drive are safe, suitable and reliable.

In West Suffolk there are two licensing authorities, Forest Heath District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council. To apply for a licence click on the licensing authority relevant to you. If you do not know who that is, visit Gov.UK, find your local council
