RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall

In January 2015, following a review and months of uncertainty, the US Government announced its decision to close RAF Mildenhall, while expanding RAF Lakenheath.

In 2017 the Ministry of Defence (MOD) which owns the RAF Mildenhall site, announced that RAF Mildenhall would  not be vacated until 2024 at the earliest. We continue to liaise with the MOD to see if there is any update to this position, but currently that is the date we have. As there are a number of uncertainties with the site, not least the actual date of vacation, we are not currently pursuing the development of the site.

We will be using this page to update local communities and businesses regarding the USAFE (US armed forces in Europe) withdrawal from RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath expansion.

RAF Mildenhall's future consultation (6 September to 13 October 2016).

We have been working in partnership with the Local Enterprise Partnerships, Suffolk County Council and Newmarket and District Chamber of Commerce (which covers the Mildenhall area) to develop a vision and prospectus for sustainable alternative uses for the RAF Mildenhall site. We ran a consultation to find out what you thought of the vision and prospectus during September and October 2016. Changes were made as a result of the consultation and the final version was unanimously approved at Forest Heath Full Council on 22 November 2016. View the RAF Mildenhall vision and prospectus
