On 1 April 2019 Forest Heath District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be replaced by a single district council called West Suffolk Council. It will entirely replace the borough and district councils but will continue to deliver the same services while finding improved ways of supporting communities, businesses and the local economy. Over the next few weeks you may notice changes to the website, forms, letters and emails, and there will be limited access to some of our online systems as we prepare for the creation of the new council.
The chairman is elected by the Council annually. The chairman presides over all council meetings and also represents the district at social, charitable and civic functions.
Areas are broadly designated boroughs or districts. A borough has usually been granted the title historically by royal authority, boroughs will have a mayor. There are two types of mayor:

The Chairman and Vice-Chairman were appointed at the first meeting of the Shadow Council on 30 May 2018 and will hold office until immediately after the election of a Chairman and Vice Chairman at the Annual Meeting of the West Suffolk Council in 2019.
The Chairman (or in their absence, the Vice-Chairman) chairs meetings of the Shadow Council in accordance with the Shadow Constitution, so that its business can be carried out efficiently and with regard to the rights of councillors and the interests of the community.
The Chairman of the Shadow Council will not undertake a civic and ceremonial role. This role is discharged by the Chairman of Forest Heath District Council and the Mayor of St Edmundsbury Borough Council across the West Suffolk area.
