Taxi licences

Single council changes to your Taxi and private hire handbook

On 1 April 2019, we will become a single council which means we will be making some changes to the way we licence vehicles, drivers and operators. Main changes proposed are:

  • age restrictions for new and replacement vehicles
  • hackney zones using existing areas and liveries
  • other minor amendments

To find out more and have your say visit: Consultation to support the alignment of the Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury taxi licensing handbooks. The consultation closes on 5 November 2018.

If you want to run a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle business, you will need to apply for the appropriate licence from the licensing authority you wish to operate in. Separate licences will be required for vehicles, drivers and operating companies.

The purpose of licensing is to ensure the safety of the public, by checking that the drivers are fit and proper, and that the vehicles they drive are safe, suitable and reliable.

In West Suffolk there are two licensing authorities, Forest Heath District Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council. To apply for a licence click on the licensing authority relevant to you. If you do not know who that is, visit Gov.UK, find your local council

If you are renewing your vehicle licence and looking to upgrade your existing licensed vehicle to electric, you may be eligible to a grant. Please read this leaflet Business Energy Efficiency Anglia (BEE Anglia) to see if you meet the criteria.
