Great British September Clean 2020

Save the date and join the UK's biggest ever clean-up

The Great British Spring Clean was due to take place in March but was postponed due to COVID-19 and the lockdown that followed. It has now been rescheduled for the 11 to 27 of September with the aim of bringing people from across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches.

In West Suffolk we are delighted to be in a position to support this initiative but as COVID-19 is still with us, we have needed to make some changes from how it has been run in the past. Please read these changes carefully before planning your event.

This year we will be lending the equipment on a long term basis rather than collecting it after your event. As we have a limited stock it will be first come, first serve until we run out. The intention is for group leaders to keep hold of the sets until we deem it safe to have them returned and therefore we would encourage you to make use of these sets during this time. If anyone would like to have the equipment permanently then please let us know and we will add them to our list of volunteers.

For the safety of all involved, you must read and comply with the guidance produced by Keep Britain Tidy

Main changes:

  • Events to be held in bubbles of up to six people including group leader
  • Bring your own gloves and hand sanitiser to the event
  • Dispose of the waste you’ve collected in your own bins. Grey bags with ‘West Suffolk Council’ logo on them could be put next to your bin as side waste and the crew will pick it on your usual collection day, and
  • Bags to must be left in situ for 72 hours prior to collection and the collection must be prearranged.

A general West Suffolk Council’s guide for volunteers can be found here

If you are interested in organising a litter pick in your area for a group of up to 6 people then please email volunteers@westsuffolk.gov.uk noting on the subject line which town or village you are planning to run the event in.
