August 2021 WSC Young Trader of the Year

Young entrepreneurs will be bringing their ideas to the market and trading off in the regional finals of a national competition in Bury St Edmunds next Wednesday (4 August).

The town is hosting the East of England regional final of the NMFT (National Market Traders Federation) Young Trader of the Year.

The young traders – all aged between 16 to 30, will be scored on their products, customer service skills, professionalism and how they interact with the other market traders. There will be four categories – one for traders selling food and drink, one for arts and crafts, another for general retail and a final one for groceries with a winner and highly commended award given for each. These eight, including an overall winner, will then go through to the national finals taking place on 27 August and 28 August at Stratford Upon Avon.

Cllr Susan Glossop, Cabinet Member for Growth at West Suffolk Council said: “We are delighted to be hosting this East of England final. We actively encourage and support new business start-ups on our market. It is a great place for people who are starting afresh or even just starting their career to see how their products sell, build their own confidence and develop their customer skills. It’s also somewhere people can bring their creative passions and turn them into livelihoods and I am very much looking forward to meeting the young traders and seeing what they are selling. While sadly not all of them will be able to progress to the national finals, it is my hope that for many, it could lead to something even greater with the start of their very own business here in West Suffolk.”

It is the ninth year of the competition and the first time it has held an East of England Regional Final.

NMTF’s CEO Joe Harrison said: “Over the last eight years the NMTF’s Young Traders Market Programme has gone from strength to strength. We are very much looking forward to the event in Bury St Edmunds and have a great array of budding young entrepreneurs lined up to attend. We very much hope that the public will come out to show their support for the young business owners.”

There’s still time for people aged between 16 and 30-years-old to enter the competition. West Suffolk Council, which runs the markets, will supply the table and gazebo and cover the insurance costs. To take part email
