Storm Eunice update

Update Saturday 18 February: All our parks and cemeteries have re-opened following Storm Eunice.

The amber weather warning which is in place for West Suffolk on Friday 18 February 2022 from 5am to 9pm, has been upgraded to a red warning from 10am to 3pm.

Parks and cemeteries closures

Following warnings from the Met Office over Storm Eunice and advice from the Forestry Commission West Suffolk Council will closed all gated parks and cemeteries the authority manages last night (17 February) until at least Saturday morning.

This includes parks and open spaces such as Abbey Gardens, Nowton Park and West Stow Country Park. Cemeteries include those at Haverhill, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.

This is to protect the public from possible trees and other debris damaged by the storm.

West Suffolk Council continues to have a team on hand, working with contractors, to clear any dangerous trees or debris.

Residents and visitors are asked to follow advice about not travelling and not to enter parks that cannot be locked due to the high wind conditions.

A review will take place midday, tomorrow, Friday on football matches which were due to go ahead in Nowton Park and Hardwick Heath as well as Park Runs.

As soon as it is safe to do so the parks and cemeteries will be re-opened.

February 18 market cancellations

West Suffolk Council will be cancelling the markets in Haverhill and Mildenhall on Friday 18 February.

Closures are a necessary precaution to ensure the safety of all market users and traders.
