Clare market is to receive a new, permanent power box on the Market Hill.

Currently Clare market is the only market in West Suffolk that is without a proper power box. Investing in the power box will enable improvements to the market offer, town centre retail and service infrastructure, plus help other town centre events that take place on Market Hill.

The power box will support current market traders and it is hoped that it will help grow the market as traders will have access to a safe electrical point.

Clare market takes place on the third Saturday of every month, with around 20 local stalls operating at present. Products include homewares, jewellery, clothing and hot food with the produce ranging from seasonal fruit and vegetables, locally baked bread, homemade cakes and jams and a lovely selection of flowers and plants.

The project received £8,910 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.

Lark Electrical Technology have been awarded the contract to supply the feeder pillars and power box. They will be carrying out the work which is scheduled to be completed within the next 8 weeks.

Cllr Susan Glossop, Cabinet Member for Growth, West Suffolk Council said: “Our markets are a huge part of community life, and I am pleased that Clare market is receiving funding to have a power box fitted to benefit the traders and community. Markets are an excellent way to start or grow a business, by having access to a safe electricity source I hope that more entrepreneurs will be encouraged to trade on our markets. Supporting the local markets helps keep our town centres economically vibrant and thriving.”
