Bury through to Britain in Bloom
10 Nov 2017
Bury St Edmunds has been chosen to represent East Anglia in the town category of the national Britain in Bloom awards next year.
Bury in Bloom, a sub group of the Bury Society, which works with a partnership of organisations to involve the community in making their beautiful cathedral town floral, recently won the award for best overall entry in the 2017 Anglia in Bloom awards. This qualified the town to go forward with other category winners to be picked to for the 2018 national awards. It was announced on 9 November that it will be one of five towns and villages going forward to represent East Anglia (a large area including Suffolk, Norfolk, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Hertfordshire) in the national awards in 2018.
Melanie Lesser, Bury in Bloom Co-ordinator said,
‘The Anglia in Bloom judges made some amazing comments. They said that our marks are some of the highest ever given, and that there was a wow factor at every turning on the route. We will be judged twice next year, firstly by Anglia in Bloom and then by Britain in Bloom and there is an opportunity for anyone who wants to, to be involved. Please get in touch. We thank everyone who has already contributed to this success and look forward to taking it to the national level with you.’
Cllr Jo Rayner, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture said,
‘I am thrilled that we are through and I congratulate everyone whose hard work helps make the town so special. It is a true community effort led with energy and ingenuity and I am very proud of the part our street scene, parks and gardens team play. We have been consistent performers in Anglia in Bloom but it has been a few years since we went through to the national level. We will be up against some iconic towns, and I am confident that our residents, business and partners will continue to do the town proud’.
Matt Osborne of Greene King, which has announced it will be sponsoring Bury in Bloom for second three year period, said,
‘It is wonderful to be supporting this great local initiative’.
