Businesses in West Suffolk with suitable roofs are being offered the chance for fully funded solar panels, reducing their energy bills and carbon emissions, and providing cost certainty.

West Suffolk Council is committed to working towards carbon net zero by 2030 and its Solar for Business scheme is helping organisations on that journey. It is now inviting more businesses to join the 67 organisations currently benefiting, and between them preventing 1300 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere every year.

Cllr Andy Drummond, portfolio holder for Regulatory and Environment said

“The free scheme sees solar panels installed on suitable roofs. The electricity generated is sold back to the business at a lower rate than the current tariff.

“Testimonials from scheme members highlight the match with their corporate values and practical risk management, given the current energy markets. They also mention the quality of the build, the lack of disruption, and reduced reliance on the grid. One business said they powered their entire operation by solar for several days in July, and even on overcast days the new panels still generate a significant amount of electricity. The small return the council makes through electricity sales enables us to continue to reinvest in renewable energy projects and to help other businesses.

“Expressing interest is simple, just contact environment@westsuffolk.gov.uk . It would help us understand your electricity consumption if you could attach a recent electricity bill and please tell us if you own the premises you would like the panels installed on.”

Cllr Susan Glossop said

“This council has made economic growth a priority. Businesses, like everyone else, are facing rising costs and this scheme make it easy for you to save significant sums of money on energy bills. It also allows you to focus on expanding your business and achieving your ambitions here in West Suffolk. There is help through other initiatives too. Please take a look at our green business web pages for sustainable business grants, travel planning, low carbon heating, electric vehicle support and loans and investments information. Our Economic Growth team is always happy to discuss how we may help further.”
