West Suffolk Call for Sites 2026

Audience: Landowners, developers, planning agents, other stakeholders

This consultation is now closed.

It was open from 23 March 2026 to 20 May 2026.

Developers and landowners are being asked to put forward sites to be considered for potential future growth in West Suffolk.

West Suffolk Council has issued the call for sites ahead of formally beginning work towards the preparation of the next local plan for the district. The call for sites will be open for eight weeks from the 23 March to the 20 May.

The council adopted the current West Suffolk Local Plan in July last year. The adopted plan runs to the year 2041 and governs where new homes can be built. It also sets aside land to support employment growth and policies to shape the housing that comes forward including to increase the number of affordable homes that are being built.

The preparation of the new local plan for West Suffolk will ensure growth will be plan led.

With or without a local plan, new housing development will still take place. Local plans serve to protect the countryside as well as against speculative and piecemeal development and ensure infrastructure funding is secured from developers for things such as community facilities, education, health and transport including roads, footpaths and cycleways.

The call for sites will feed into the next West Suffolk Local Plan, currently due to cover the period up to 2045.

The council is asking for land to be put forward for consideration for:

  • housing - market housing, affordable housing, Gypsy and Traveller accommodation
  • employment - industrial, retail, offices, tourism
  • mixed uses - a combination of uses
  • infrastructure - schools, community facilities, renewable energy generation
  • green infrastructure - parks, allotments, areas of biodiversity net gain, play areas and other open space.

If you are aware of any potential sites for the above uses in West Suffolk that are available for development, then please let us know by submitting the land on our website at West Suffolk Planning Policy Consultations - log in page - go to Call for sites with potential for development - March to May 2026.

If your site has previously been submitted t the council as part of the strategic housing and economic land availability assessment (SHELAA), we ask you resubmit your site in this call for sites to ensure all the information is up to date. This will ensure an accurate assessment of its suitability, availability and achievability.

The eight-week call for sites will close at 5pm on Wednesday 20 May 2026.
