  • for applications involving the naming of new streets, check proposed street names and if they are acceptable, begin the consultation process
  • allocate property numbers and create a plot to postal schedule and numbered plan
  • for named properties, check proposed names for availability and discuss with the applicant until a suitable name is agreed
  • request postal addresses from Royal Mail
  • provide the applicant with a confirmation detailing the new street names and/or property names and/or numbers
  • notify relevant internal and external departments of the new streets and/or addresses.

Property naming

Property owners can apply to change the name of their property or add a name to a numbered property. Property names must be checked and approved by West Suffolk Council to be included in the official address.

If the chosen name is not available, the property owner may either suggest alternative names or request that the application is refunded and cancelled.

It is not possible to replace a property number with a name.

Property naming criteria and application guidance

Street naming

Where a new development requires a new street name, the developer may propose the new names. We will check that the proposed street name meets our criteria. We recommend providing at least two options per street in case any names are not available.

Once a suitable street name has been agreed between the developer and West Suffolk Council, we will consult with the town/parish council and ward members.

We recommend that the applicant discusses their street naming proposals with the parish or town council before submitting a street naming and numbering application.

Property numbering

New properties will be allocated numbers in a logical order, not excluding any numbers from the scheme. Property numbers may not be the same as the plot numbers.
Suffixed numbers such as 1A, 1B may be used for new properties between two numbered properties.

Property numbers should be clearly displayed on the property for ease of identification.
