Why is the Animal Welfare Licensing Policy Statement being consulted on?

This will be the first Animal Welfare Licensing Policy Statement that we have adopted. As a result, we want to hear any comments or feedback you may have.

What the policy covers

This policy sets out how we exercise our functions in relation to animal related licensing matters, under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018.

This includes dealing with applications for new licences and issues relating to licensed premises to include, but not limited to:

  • animal boarding establishments for dogs and cats
  • dangerous wild animals
  • dog breeding
  • keeping or training animals for exhibition
  • pet shops
  • riding establishments
  • zoos

The consultation will run from 9am on 19 July 2021. The closing date for comments is 11.59pm on 30 August 2021.

What happens after the consultation period

All responses will be considered prior to the adoption of the final policy statement. Following this, we'll notify all respondents (and licence holders), of the final policy statement that has been adopted.
