The Rise and Fall: From West Stow to the Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Norman conquest of Anglo-Saxon England is about to go on display in Britain for the first time in more than 900 years.

And people can discover how it all began for the Anglo-Saxons here in West Suffolk.

West Stow was the site of an early Anglo-Saxon settlement from around the year 420AD to 720AD. The site was the subject of excavations from 1957-1972 which led to the reconstruction of their buildings as part of a huge experimental archaeology project that has been running for over 50 years.

Half a century later, West Stow offers a unique insight into early Anglo-Saxon life with six reconstructed buildings. In addition, the site also explores the history of the Lark Valley area from the Stone Age up to the Anglo-Saxons and has recently built an Iron Age round house.

West Suffolk Council manages the day-to-day running of the reconstructed buildings on behalf of the West Stow Saxon Village Trust, along with the Anglo-Saxon Museum and Archaeology Gallery.

West Stow also features events and activities throughout the year to appeal to a variety of different ages and interests.

On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September West Stow will host Wulfheodenas, an international living history group that meticulously researches early Anglo-Saxon life and recreates the weaponry, crafts, and clothing.  Visitors are invited to meet members and find out more about the culture of the Anglo-Saxon Mead Hall from the 5th to 7th centuries.

Cllr Ian Shipp, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture at West Suffolk Council said: “There’s great excitement nationally with the 70-metre Bayeux Tapestry about to go on public display for 10 months at the British Museum. It’s the first time that people have been able to see the original tapestry in England since its creation 950 years ago.

“While it will be great to have the opportunity to see this piece of history that documents the Norman conquest of Anglo-Saxon England, we have our own fascinating, important and unique piece of the story for residents and visitors to discover here in West Suffolk.”
