Young Trader Competition

Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds will be proudly hosting the local heats for the Young Traders Market 2024 competition, marking the fourth consecutive year of hosting both the local heats and the highly anticipated regional competition.

The winners and runners-up from the local heats will take part in the regional final in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 31 July with the hope to progress to the national final in Stratford-upon-Avon over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

A variety of products will be on offer from the young traders, including homewares, food and drink, arts and crafts, and clothing. Many of the competitors regularly trade at the West Suffolk markets, including the monthly makers markets in Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and Newmarket. Most of the young traders have established online shops and trade at other markets, fairs and events.

Jessica Moulsher and Sophie Mann were the previous two overall winners of the National Young Traders competition that had traded at the East of England regional final that was held in Bury St Edmunds.

The NMTF (National Market Trader Federation) Young Traders Market is a national campaign to attract young people to support and trade on the markets. West Suffolk Council proudly supports the NMTF campaign and assisted competitors by supplying tables and gazebos, plus covering insurance costs.

Cllr Indy Wijenayaka, Cabinet Member for Growth at West Suffolk Council said: “The Young Trader Competition is an excellent opportunity for anyone aged 16 to 30 who is considering starting their own businesses or who wants to turn their creative passion into a livelihood, or even just a supplementary income. It’s the perfect opportunity for entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to the marketplace, build their confidence, test their products out to see what sells and develop their customer skills. I’m really looking forward to seeing our talented young traders flourish in the competition and hope the local community will come along to support the competition.”

Those looking to try their hand at trading will be scored by a team of local judges on their products, customer service skills, professionalism and how they interact with the other market traders.
