A new cycle parking area is now open at Bury St Edmunds station.
Representatives from Greater Anglia, West Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council gathered to officially open the £200,000 Cycle Hub on 18 September.
Located at the recently created northern entrance to the station, replacing the former car wash waiting room, the Cycle Hub offers 52 spaces on a first come, first-served basis.
The new hub is fully enclosed and covered by additional lighting and CCTV to enhance security, and also offers space for 16 cycles in a secure, access-controlled area.
Access to the access-controlled area is via a SMART Card, which can be purchased for £25 per year at Greater Anglia - Cycling
The Cycle Hub has been funded in partnership with the Department for Transport (funds managed by Sustrans), Suffolk County Council and West Suffolk Council.
In addition, a new walking and cycle path and speed bumps have been installed on the northern approach road to the station to improve safety for people walking or cycling to the station.
Andrew Goodrum, Greater Anglia Infrastructure and Major Projects Director, said: "We’re delighted to have received this funding to improve security and accessibility for cycles at Bury St Edmunds station.
"The new facility will not only help to provide greater security at for cyclists, but it will help to encourage more people to travel more sustainably by bike and public transport to help improve congestion on the roads and the quality of the air we breathe.”
Cllr Alexander Nicoll, Deputy Cabinet member for Transport Strategy, Suffolk County Council said: “Our ambition is to give people in Suffolk a wider range of safe, convenient, and sustainable travel choices. A key part is to ensure that people have the facilities they need to link cycle trips with public transport.
“We welcome Greater Anglia’s continued investment in rail stations across Suffolk, and we are pleased to have contributed to the new cycle facilities at Bury St Edmunds station. We look for-ward to working with Greater Anglia on further improvements in the future.”
Cllr Indy Wijenayaka, Cabinet Member for Growth at West Suffolk Council, said: “We are thrilled that Bury St Edmunds Train Station now offers a new, secure cycle hub for those using the station and rail service. West Suffolk Council has provided funding for the project via the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Ensuring residents can access public transport through active travel opportunities improves physical health and enhances community wellbeing. This investment has also improved cycle access to the station, by developing infrastructure that supports sustainable growth, reduces traffic pollution, promotes better connectivity and builds upon environmental resilience. We will continue to work with partners as we strive for all residents to have access to sustainable and active travel options across West Suffolk."
David Hibbs, Programme Manager, Cycle Rail, Sustrans, said: “Trains are great for longer distance journeys, but passengers have to get to the station. This investment will make it easier for people to choose to walk or cycle to the station – a healthier, cheaper and more convenient option."
