Young entrepreneurs invited to take part in the Young Trader Competition 2026
01 Apr 2026
West Suffolk is once again preparing to celebrate fresh talent and creativity as Haverhill, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds get ready to host the local heats of the Young Traders Competition.
Now in its sixth year of hosting both the local heats and regional final, the competition continues to attract a vibrant mix of new local traders aged 16 to 30 who are thinking about starting their own business, developing a creative idea or earning additional income.
The local heats this year will be held in Haverhill on Saturday 4 July from 9am to 3pm, Newmarket on Saturday 11 July from 9am to 3pm, and Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 15 July from 9am to 4pm.
The highly commended and winners of the local heats will advance to the regional final in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday 29 July from 9am to 4pm. Competitors will be battling for a place at the national final in Stratford-upon-Avon over the August bank holiday weekend.
The Young Trader Competition offers a supportive environment to showcase products, gain real-world trading experience, and connect with other traders and customers. Whether just starting out or looking to grow an existing business, it’s an excellent opportunity to build skills and confidence.
Competitors will be assessed by a panel of local judges based on their products, customer service skills, interactions with other traders, and professionalism.
Shoppers can look forward to a wide variety of high-quality products, from homewares and crafts, to food, drink, clothing and more!
The competition is organised by the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) as a nationwide initiative that supports young people in exploring market trading as a business opportunity. West Suffolk Council is proud to back the scheme, offering practical support such as stalls, gazebos, and insurance to help participants get started.
