Hardwick Heath Pond set to re-open on a booked basis thanks to local organisation.

Out-Space, a local organisation who delivers one to one fishing and a structured fitness and wellbeing programmes for people referred through schools, local authorities, and SEND teams, have teamed up with West Suffolk Council.

This collaboration will see Out-Space taking on the fishing rights at the pond in Hardwick Heath for children and people with learning difficulties as part of their bookable programmes.

Out-Space is a not-for-profit organisation that offers supports to young people who feel overwhelmed, disengaged or stuck; and strengthens wellbeing and confidence through routine, clear goals and consistency.

Following an agreement to take on the fishing rights from 1 April 2026, work has taken place to restore the pond to a suitable condition for coarse fishing, and is now open.

Out-Space plan to use the area to its full potential and undertake their programmes where they can empower individuals through physical movements, such as fishing, and prioritises visual coaching through visual aids and demonstrations. These techniques come together as part of a routine, offering consistency, which helps to build independence and improve task focus for individuals involved.

Cllr Ian Shipp, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture at West Suffolk Council said: “It is great to see such an amazing opportunity on offer to young people in need of additional support.

“I am delighted that Out-Space have taken on the lease of the pond and will be making the most of what the location has to offer. This is a brilliant example of the council working with partners to help our communities thrive through beneficial experiences that bolster individuals’ health and wellbeing.

“I look forward to see how Out-Space, the pupils, and the pond will flourish with this new opportunity!”

Lyndon Samuel, Founder of Out-Space said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for Out-Space to be a part of!

“For many individuals who attend the programmes on offer, they can experience a moment of peace, a chance to take a step back, and take in their surroundings. I feel that Hardwick Heath Pond is the perfect place for many more participants to switch-off and find a moment of calm.”

The pond remains a restricted area and is only open to those attending with Out-Space. People should not enter the pond area during hours of darkness, without consent, or without a member of staff present. The council will support proceedings against those found poaching within the area.
