World Cup campaign scores with national sides and local businesses
10 Jul 2026
Helping businesses and supporters back England and Scotland during the World Cup has been the goal of West Suffolk Council.
Like other authorities and Government buildings across the country, West Suffolk Council is flying the St George Cross flag while England’s Three Lions squad are in the competition.
Also, the council has been making sure pubs and other licensed premises are able to score with extra time by being able to open for matches which are being played late or in the early hours.
Applications increased for businesses to stay open by 40 per cent from 57 in June 2025 to 80 this year. West Suffolk Council have been able to tell businesses about the changes to national guidance and process applications on time, so landlords did not fall foul of the law.
West Suffolk Council is responsible for working with partners including the police, fire and ambulance service, to ensure the safety of public events in the area. We have offered advice and support for those planning a public event, as well as providing helpful information on our website.
Cllr Cliff Waterman, Leader of West Suffolk Council, said: “I am pleased we have been able to help supporters and businesses enjoy extra time and see the matches live. Managing the new guidance and supporting businesses through the process requires teamwork and I am glad to say we have been match fit in meeting this extra demand. We, like other councils and Government buildings across the country, are flying the St George Cross and hope the team can bring it home this summer. Our flag is a proud symbol of the unity and diversity of our communities all coming together to support our national team.”
