Opening the door to democracy: Annual canvass home visits

West Suffolk residents are reminded to check their electoral registration details are correct or risk losing their voice in future elections and referendums, with the start of the annual canvass personal visits.

The annual canvass is a legal requirement that identifies those who risk not being able to vote due to outdated information and ensure residents have registered before it is too late. To do this, West Suffolk Council are required by law to contact every residential property in the district.

From Friday 4 September 2026, trained canvassers will visit properties where no response has been received to previous communications sent by email, text message or post.

Where new electors need to be added to the register, canvassers will be able to securely collect key information, including dates of birth and National Insurance numbers, to support the registration process.

The tablet used to collect information synchronises with the electoral register so details are always updated, with the electors information remaining secure and verified quickly without the need to send out further forms.

If a canvasser is unable to contact a resident, they will leave a calling card advising why the visit was made and the steps for the resident to make.

Cllr Diane Hind, Cabinet Member for Resources at West Suffolk Council, said: “Maintaining an accurate electoral register is an important and statutory responsibility that helps ensure that residents can participate in the democratic process.

“If you receive any communication from the council about updating your details, please do provide the necessary information. By responding sooner, it ensures the process is quicker and smoother, with less visits undertaken by our canvassers.”
