Redevelopment works begin on Mildenhall Bus Station

Construction work to redevelop the former Mildenhall Bus Station started on Monday 7 September.

West Suffolk Council, who own the site, are converting the building into a commercially lettable space.

Following a competitive tender process for the required works, Rose Builders were awarded the contract earlier this year. Preparatory activities have already taken place ahead of the main works commencing.

The works involve internal alterations to create a new layout, replacing doors with windows on the north elevation and the blocking up of doors on the east elevation.

The council have ensured the public toilets at the site are retained. They will be redesigned and modernised as part of the works for continued community use.

Cllr Diane Hind, Portfolio Holder for Resources at West Suffolk Council, said: “The council hopes that converting the former bus station will enhance the viability of the building, support job creation and improve the attractiveness of the area.

“This is part of the council’s commitment to invest in our towns and provides the opportunity for business use, which complements our strategic priorities of thriving communities and sustainable growth.”

Cllr Ian Shipp, Ward Member for Kingsway and Market, said: “It is great to see this investment in the town centre coming to fruition with works underway. I look forward to an announcement of a future tenant and seeing how this positively benefits our local community and economy in Mildenhall.”

The proposed development will not impact the bus service, and the covered outdoor seating will be kept.
