Suffolk solar scheme helps residents make the switch

A group-buying scheme has helped Suffolk residents take practical steps towards generating renewable energy through the installation of solar panels.

Switch Together Suffolk, formerly known as Solar Together Suffolk, is a scheme that helps homeowners install solar panels and battery storage through a group-buying scheme, ensuring they are paying the right price for a high-quality installation from pre-approved installers, while increasing their independence from the grid and reducing carbon emissions.

The scheme is brought to residents by Sustainable Suffolk, a partnership of all Suffolk’s public sector organisations, to help people save money on their energy bills and live more sustainably.

The success of Switch Together Suffolk is reflected in the number of installations completed through the scheme, with 32 installations in West Suffolk in 2025, including 378 solar panels and 31 batteries fitted to participating homes within the district, resulting in a reduction of over 24 tonnes of carbon emissions. In total, participants invested a collective total of £242,795 into the installation of solar panels and batteries.

For many households, joining the scheme was just the beginning of their journey towards renewable energy. As well as considering solar panels and batteries, participating residents discovered how they could make the most of their renewable electricity by installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers at home.

Cllr Gerald Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Regulatory, said: “We are delighted by the success of the Switch Together Suffolk scheme and the strong response from residents. The Solar Together group-buying scheme offers a straightforward way to make an informed decision and to access a competitive offer from a trusted, vetted provider.

“The latest results demonstrate the continued demand from homeowners in West Suffolk looking to reduce their reliance on the grid, lowering their energy costs and reduce their carbon emissions. What is particularly encouraging to see is residents considering what they can do next, such as installing EV chargers and battery storage to make use of the electricity they generate at home.”

Residents do not need to wait until next summer to upgrade their heating system as the partnership launched another group-buying scheme offer in August, but this time for heat pumps. The scheme is offered in collaboration with government grants, meaning residents could get money towards an installation if they have an outdated or inefficient heating system.
