Town centre improvements to bus station and car parks announced

Resurfacing work to Haverhill bus station and its neighbouring car parks, is due to 
take place next month with temporary changes and closures due to take place.

West Suffolk Council is reinvesting close to £152,000 of car parks income for the resurfacing and relining work to the Jubilee Walk car parks and bus station lane. While West Suffolk is responsible for the bus lane and car parks, repairs to roads and pavements come under the responsibility of the County Council.

The work will also deliver more blue badge parking across the main and smaller Jubilee Walk car parks, increasing the number of bays from 12 to 21 spaces.

To enable the works, both main and smaller Jubilee Walk car parks and the bus lane will close from 5 October.

The bus lane will be resurfaced first and new road markings put in. Temporary entrances and exits for buses into the main Jubilee Walk car park will enable them to pick up and drop off passengers next to the existing bus shelters. People will simply get on or off on the other side of the pavement.

The bus lane works are only scheduled to take five days after which services will revert back to the usual entrance and exit. The council has liaised with the bus companies that use the station and Suffolk County Council to confirm they were happy with these temporary measures.

There will then be limited parking in the Jubilee Walk main car park over the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October before a full closure from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October during which it will be resurfaced and relined.

The works to the smaller car park will overlap with the bus lane works. Although the smaller car park could also be closed to Friday 16 October, the council may reopen it earlier if works allow.

All of the dates are weather dependent and have been scheduled for completion ahead of the school half-term. All works will take place between 8am and 5pm.  There are no plans for unsociable hours/overnight works.

Cllr Dave Taylor, Cabinet Member for Operations at West Suffolk Council, said: “Both the bus lane and the car parks are suffering from wear and tear. We are reinvesting income from our car parks to deliver these improvements which include resurfacing, relining, new marking to the bus lane and additional bays for blue badge holders. All of this will make it easier for people coming in by bus or car to access the town centre, supporting our wider ambitions for its growth and success.”
