West Suffolk towns celebrate success in Anglia in Bloom

Brandon and Bury St Edmunds have both been recognised for their outstanding floral displays and environmental work after receiving awards in the Anglia in Bloom competition.

Anglia in Bloom forms part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign and brings together towns, cities and communities from across the six eastern counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The awards were presented at a ceremony held in St Ives on Thursday 24 September 2026.

Brandon enjoyed a successful year in the competition, securing gold and being named the overall winner in the town category. St Peter’s Churchyard also received a gold award and was named the overall winner in the best churchyard category. The town was further recognised with the FIFA World Cup Special Category award, while Brandon Country Park was awarded gold in the public parks category.

There was further success for Bury St Edmunds, which was awarded gold and named the overall winner in the large town category, as well as being crowned Suffolk county overall champion. The Abbey Gardens also received gold in the historic parks and gardens category, while Nowton Park was awarded gold in the public parks category. The Quaker Burial Ground was presented with silver-gilt in the Best Cemetery category, and the Angel Hotel received silver in the hospitality services category.

Cllr Ian Shipp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: ““Anglia in Bloom showcases the difference that can be made when communities come together with passion, creativity and a shared commitment to improving their local environment. It is about much more than flowers and planting – it reflects the pride local people take in making their communities attractive, welcoming and sustainable.

“Everyone who has contributed to the success of our towns deserves recognition for the time, effort and enthusiasm they have given. Their work helps create vibrant, thriving communities across West Suffolk and encourages a real sense of pride in the places we call home.

“A huge thank you goes to all involved in Bury in Bloom and Brandon in Bloom groups in our district, as well as the staff and volunteers who maintain our parks and gardens to such a high standard.”

Anglia in Bloom encourages communities to improve their local environment through the creative use of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping. The competition also promotes clean, litter-free and sustainable surroundings, alongside community involvement and pride in local areas.
