Decarbonisation of The Apex

The final stage of the decarbonisation works at The Apex have now been completed, marking an important step in reducing carbon emissions and running costs.

The decarbonisation work included a range of improvements to the building, including the replacement of gas boilers with air source heat pumps, upgrades to light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and the removal of gas systems that were replaced with more energy-efficient electrical equipment.

Together, the improvements will help the popular venue use less energy, reduce heating and operational costs, whilst contributing to West Suffolk Council’s commitment to achieve net zero by 2039.

The overall project is expected to reduce The Apex’s annual carbon emissions from 127.62 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per annum, to 71.23 tonnes CO2 per annum. This is the equivalent of taking approximately 12 to 13 petrol cars off the roads.

The project began in summer 2025 and was supported by £1.1 million from the council’s decarbonisation fund, with a further £1.01 million funded through West Suffolk Council’s Asset Management Plan reserve.

Cllr Gerald Kelly, Cabinet Member for Governance, Regulatory and Environment at West Suffolk Council, said: “The completion of the decarbonisation works at one of the busiest and energy-intensive venues in West Suffolk will deliver meaningful benefits to the local community.

“By replacing older heating systems and introducing more efficient technologies, we have enabled The Apex to use cleaner energy and consume less of it. While these energy-saving measures will help reduce energy costs and consumption, they are also a vital step in future-proofing our public buildings and strengthening environmental resilience across the district.”

Cllr Ian Shipp, Cabinet Member for Leisure at West Suffolk Council, said: “The Apex plays an important role in the cultural life of the town, welcoming audiences, community groups and visitors throughout the year. The decarbonisation works will create a more comfortable internal environment, provide improved heating and environmental controls, enhance conditions for performers and audiences, and deliver better indoor air quality.

“The completion of these works represents a major upgrade to the venue, with an investment that will help The Apex continue to be a vibrant and valued part of the town centre for many years to come. We sincerely thank residents for their continued patience throughout any temporary disruption.”

The council’s continued efforts to decarbonise its buildings has led to West Suffolk Council being named the top performing district council in the buildings and heating category of the environmental scorecard issued by Climate Emergency UK.
