Keep the Heat scheme

The Suffolk scheme to help households stay warm and reduce energy costs, is making a positive difference for residents in West Suffolk.

The Keep the Heat scheme uses thermal imaging cameras to help residents detect heat loss for free around windows, doors and walls in their homes, before they become costly problems.

Sustainable Suffolk loans cameras directly to residents through Suffolk libraries for free, as well as to community groups. The thermal imaging cameras can also be held by local authorities, such as West Suffolk Council, to promote the service to residents.

From January to March 2026, the cameras at West Suffolk Council supported 84 households in West Suffolk to locate areas in their home where heat is lost. Residents also had the opportunity to discuss available government initiatives and grants with a Healthy Homes Advisor, to support home insulation and renewable energy installations.

Through using the thermal scans and resolving small fixes, residents can reduce their energy bills, have fewer emergency repairs, a warmer house and a reduced carbon footprint.

Before the thermal scans, 97 per cent of households in the Keep the Heat scheme were unaware of any available energy grants and schemes that could insulate their homes further. After the using the thermal imaging camera and speaking to the Healthy Homes Advisor, many participants stated that they would be interested in applying for the grants.

Local resident, Bradley said: “The support I received through the scheme has made a real difference in my home. It is much warmer and comfortable, and I am less worried about my energy bills. I would encourage all residents to use the cameras to check for heat loss points, as well as discuss possible grants and other schemes that can help you save money and help the environment.”

Cllr Gerald Kelly, Cabinet Member for Environment and Regulatory at West Suffolk Council and Chair of the Suffolk Councils’ Environment Portfolio Holders’ Group, said: “It is incredibly encouraging to see the impact the Keep the Heat scheme is having. The success of the scheme demonstrates what can be achieved when practical support is delivered directly to residents. The thermal imaging cameras create lasting change by reducing costs, improving comfort, and supporting healthier, thriving communities with insulated homes.”

Funded by Sustainable Suffolk, the Keep the Heat scheme remains committed to tackling fuel poverty while promoting long-term, sustainable solutions for households.

The scheme continues to work closely with local partners and community organisations to expand its reach and ensure as many people as possible can benefit from the support available.
