Major investment in play areas secures summer of fun for young people and children

Five play areas in West Suffolk are open for children and families to enjoy over the summer and beyond after a £260,000 revamp. The spaces have received upgrades as part of an ongoing council funded programme of playground refurbishments.

The five play areas that have been revamped, using ideas from local children, and now open are: 

• Broomley Green Lane, Bury St Edmunds
• Bramley Road, Haverhill
• Cloverfield, Haverhill
• Hales Barn Road, Haverhill
• Heathland Way, Mildenhall.

In addition, Alderton Close play area, which has received a £40,000 investment, in Haverhill has also been refurbished and is likely to open later in the month once fencing work has been completed. This has been delayed due to issues with the supply of materials. In the meantime, families are welcome to enjoy nearby play area at Hales Barn Road. 

The improvements have focused on making these play areas more engaging and accessible for users. The new equipment includes swings, slides and climbing units, along with more creative play options, creating inspiring spaces that bring people together. 

The council engaged with pupils from local schools near to these play areas, including St Felix Roman Catholic Primary School, Sebert Wood Community Primary School and Great Heath Academy. This consultation was invaluable in gathering children’s views of the equipment and proposals.

Cllr Ian Shipp, Cabinet Member for Leisure at West Suffolk Council said: “It is great to see the play areas updated and refreshed so that families can enjoy them during the school holidays.”

“Play areas are essential for our thriving communities, offering safe spaces for children to be able to get outside and have fun. Engaging in play and exercise provides enormous benefits to the health and wellbeing of our young residents, whilst also supporting their social development.”

“This represents a £300,000 investment in vital play facilities by West Suffolk Council as part of a much wider programme of us delivering improvements and new facilities across the district.”
