Plans for new wayfinding and directional signage in Haverhill town centre will be considered by West Suffolk’s Development Control Committee as part of wider work to enhance the town centre.

On Wednesday 14 October 2026, the committee will consider a planning and advertisement consent application submitted by West Suffolk Council for a new wayfinding signage system.

The proposals include:

  • three double-sided, non-illuminated wayfinding totems outside Haverhill Arts Centre, Boots and Peas Market Hill
  • four directional post signs outside the Arts Centre car park, Jubilee Walk, Jubilee Walk Plaza and Lower Down Slade.

The proposed signage forms part of the wider £1.693 million Haverhill High Street Enhancement Scheme, which aims to revitalise the town centre, improve its appearance and make it easier and more welcoming for residents, visitors and businesses.

The wayfinding proposals have been shaped by local engagement with residents sharing memories and stories about the town, its characters and local landscape with artist Steve Pardue. The Haverhill Local History Group have also been valuable in providing insight and historical information from their resources. The local contributions have helped develop the town centre wayfinding and ensure it reflects Haverhill’s distinctive identity and heritage.

Cllr Indy Wijenayaka, Cabinet Member for Growth at West Suffolk Council, said: “These proposals are an important first step in creating a more welcoming, attractive and connected town centre for Haverhill.

“The council hopes that by obtaining planning and advertisement consent, the signs will replace fragmented and outdated ones in the town, improve accessibility and reinforce Haverhill’s unique identity. They will also deliver visible early benefits while laying the foundations for the long-term regeneration that the Haverhill High Street scheme aims to unlock.”
