West Suffolk Council - electoral review consultation

Audience: West Suffolk residents, local businesses, parish/ town councils, elected members, political organisations

This consultation is now closed. It was open from 7 March 2018 to 28 March 2018.

If Parliament approves the proposal for a new council for West Suffolk, a new set of wards will need to be created before the first elections in 2019. This review will be carried out by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) later in the year.

The LGBCE is responsible for setting the ward boundaries for a new council and we and our communities have an early opportunity to shape the LGBCE proposals which will be consulted upon later in 2018. Earlier this year we engaged with elected members, parish and town councils and residents’ associations regarding community links and have used the feedback that we received to form some initial ward options for public consultation. As part of this process we also used the LGBCE guidance, see below:

  • LGBCE Principal Area Boundary Reviews: technical guidance (link removed April 2023 as no longer live)
  • LGBCE guidance on how to propose a pattern of wards (link removed April 2023 as no longer live)

Our public consultation on the ward options will end on 28 March 2018 and is open to anyone who wants to have their say on the options for the ward boundaries and ward names for the new West Suffolk Council. We will consider all responses to the consultation and the final council proposals will be considered by both councils in April 2018 and then submitted to the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government. However, the LGBCE will ultimately form its own view on what the new wards should be, and any organisation or individual will be able to submit their own ideas at the formal consultation stage of the process later this year.
