An advanced warning sign at Rous Road car park in Newmarket

A Newmarket car park will close for several days to enable vital resurfacing work to be completed ahead of the town’s Christmas activities and events.

Rous Road car park will close for one day on Monday 27 October for preparation works and then for four days from Monday 3 November to Thursday 6 November for resurfacing and relining to take place.

West Suffolk Council which manages the car park has written to local residents and businesses to notify them of the closures. Advanced warning signs have also gone up to warn motorists.

Cllr David Taylor, Cabinet Member for Operations at West Suffolk Council said: “The surface of the car park has deteriorated, and it is important that we reinvest money into improving this car park. We have been careful to schedule these works so that they didn’t clash with the majority of the school half term, with the programme of events at the National Horseracing Museum nearby and with the Christmas activities in the town.”

“We have considered whether we could keep the car park open and carry out the work in phases – but this would lead to prolonged disruption for local residents and businesses.”

“Our other car parks will remain open and have capacity to meet demand for this time of year.”

“We ask that people bear with us while we make these improvements and get the work done.”
