Views sought on Bury St Edmunds Walking, wheeling and cycling route

West Suffolk residents are being invited to give their views on improvements to a pedestrian and cycle route across Bury St Edmunds.

Suffolk County Council has been awarded nearly £11.7 million to develop active travel schemes, including measures such as cycle lanes, shared-use paths, and improved crossing points on roads. It is hoped that the improvements would help more people to walk, wheel and cycle in their everyday lives and to enjoy safer streets, reduced congestion and better health and air quality.

Consultation is being carried out on eighteen routes in all, one of which is an East West route across Bury St Edmunds. Responses are invited by 23 November at Suffolk Active Travel Fund Survey - Bury St Edmunds- East-West Route

Councillor Indy Wijenayaka, West Suffolk Council Cabinet member for Growth, said,

‘Creating a culture that makes active travel a preferred alternative to sitting in traffic jams starts with creating safe, easy and enjoyable routes. I encourage people who visit, work or live in Bury St Edmunds to take the opportunity to improve the town’s infrastructure and complete the survey. We need to hear from residents and businesses alike about the existing challenges so we can develop possible solutions that deliver the best possible improvements.’

The funding will help design the routes but if agreed to proceed following the consultation, some schemes will need additional funding as they move to the construction phase.
