Please note: accessibility guidance for parish councils drafting a neighbourhood plan - In 2018 the UK passed legislation which stated that all public sector websites and mobile applications needed to be made accessible, this includes all documents published on those websites.
The National Association of Local Councils has published the Website accessibility and publishing guidelines to assist parish councils in making websites and documents on their websites accessible.
Lots of other useful information can be found on:
- GOV.UK - Understanding accessibility requirements for public sector bodies
- GOV.UK - Publishing accessible documents
- W3C - Introduction to Web Accessibility
West Suffolk Council has also produced guidance to assist you when producing accessible documents for publication on its website, such as the neighbourhood plan and supporting documents.
Please note: when preparing neighbourhood plans a strategic environmental assessment screening is required. The local planning authority can complete this as could a consultant or qualifying body. If the neighbourhood plan group are choosing the local authority rather than a consultant please can notice be provided and bear in mind this task make take a number of weeks to complete. If the local authority timeframe is too long, there are a number of consultants that will complete this role for a small fee. |
Should you require any advice on the accessibility of your documents please contact us on neighbourhood.planning@westsuffolk.gov.uk for further assistance.
