Bulky household waste collection
If you cannot recycle or donate bulky items such as your furniture or white goods (for example fridges or washing machines) then we can collect and dispose of them for a fee.
Upholstered domestic seating
From 1 December 2024 West Suffolk Council has a duty of care to dispose of any upholstered domestic seating, also known as waste upholstered domestic seating (WUDS) containing persistent organic pollutants (POPs) safely and securely.
POPs are poisonous chemical substances that break down slowly and get into the food chain as a result. In the past POPs were used in various products including industrial chemicals and pesticides, and released during chemical and agricultural processes. The manufacture, sale and use of products containing POPs is now banned. POPs are classed as absolute non-hazardous waste.
Waste uplholstered domestic seating is any item of seating of a household type from households. This includes any part made of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam.
For more information please visit GOV.UK - Manage waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPS
Collecting bulky items
Items will only be collected from bin collection points. We cannot collect items from inside resident’s properties or gardens. The items need to be at the bin collection point by 6.30am on the day of collection. If you have an assisted bin collection, the collection place for any bulky items will be different, so please let us know when you make the booking.
We offer three collection categories:
- 1 to 5 items £50
- 6 to 10 items £100
- 11 to 15 items £150.
Bulky item collection is by agreement only and you will be required to pay in advance. If you receive Council Tax reduction (not including single person or student discount) you are eligible to a 50 per cent discount on the charges above for one collection a year (one collection is one to five items).
- This is a non-refundable payment.
- We have limited space on our vehicle and only items listed at the time of the booking will be collected, no changes or items can be added after the booking is made.
- We do not collect garden items.
- On an agreed date the items will be collected from 6.30am onwards. We cannot allocate time slots. Please make sure the items are left at the bin collection point on the morning of collection.
- Any upholstered seating that is damaged, for example a split in the fabric on a sofa or sofa cushion, needs to have the split taped up or the cushion bagged to make sure any POPs do not escape and contaminate the other items in the collection.
